In San Francisco we celebrated Bike to Work Day last week, but so many people are riding their bikes to work here that every day seems like Bike to Work Day. Bicycle ridership is up by 72 percent in the past six years. This has become a much more bicycle-friendly city during the past decade, but the upward trend is national, too: Bicycle commuting in the U.S. was up by 40 percent from 2000 to 2010, and in the largest “bicycle friendly” communities (as identified by the League of American Bicyclists), it was up by 77 percent.

That’s great, but it’s only scratching the surface of how biking could transform our country. Most people don’t commute to work by bike. Most of us don’t even use bikes for any of the relatively short trips we make to and from our homes. Forty percent of all car trips are to destinations less than two miles from home. If every American driver made just one of those trips each week on a bicycle instead of a car (going to church Office Stand-Alone Programs, for instance, or to the health club), we would collectively save nearly 2 billion gallons of gas in a year (not to mention about $7 billion).

So why don’t we do it?

I suspect that if you asked people why they don’t use a bike for those short trips, you’d hear one answer more than any other: “I just don’t feel safe riding in traffic.” That’s understandable, because most of our roads and cities have been engineered for the safety and convenience of drivers — not bicyclists. The solution is two-fold: Better education for both drivers and cyclists on how to safely share the road and, even more important, an investment in reconfiguring our transportation infrastructure so that bicyclists and pedestrians can both feel and be safer.

We need to do this not just because it saves on gas, helps the environment, and makes us healthier. We need to do it because many Americans do not drive at all — about 100 million as of 2009 (and that number will increase as our population ages). Walking or biking (as well as public transit) are the only ways these people can get somewhere on their own.

After decades of assuming that only cars matter Office 2010 Key, we really should be playing catch-up on behalf of other transportation modes. Currently, Americans make about 12 percent of all trips by biking or walking. So what if we invested 15 percent of our federal transportation funding on bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure? Too generous? How about 10 percent?  Five percent? Believe it or not, 5 percent would still be more than three times as much as we’re currently investing now, which is a measly 1.6 percent.

Unfortunately, Big Oil’s political allies think that even 1.6 percent is too much.

This is National Bike Month. What better time to tell our leaders that we need to invest our transportation dollars fairly? Because everyone deserves access to clean Windows 7 Product Key, affordable transportation choices.

Twenty-four hours after departing a chaotic and densely populated London Heathrow, I touch down in Greenland on what appears to be the only patch of land that isn’t blanketed in white for as far as the eye can see. The reason I’ve come to this predominantly uninhabited and perilously cold country is to learn as much as possible about its mysterious and unique food culture.

With worldwide interest in Scandinavian food at an all-time high, Greenland and its eating habits remain largely enigmatic to the rest of the world. Over the next eight days my plan is to eat as much traditional food as I can manage and spend the rest of the time meeting and speaking with locals, chefs, fishermen and anyone else related to the food industry in an attempt to gain a better understanding of what it is that typifies Greenlandic cuisine.

No part of my face manages to escape the freezing Arctic air – (Picture by Andre Schoenherr)

The walk from the plane to the terminal at Kangerlussuaq, Greenland’s largest commercial airport, is only a short distance, but there is a small problem, today’s temperature is a treacherous -45. Even though I’m totally encapsulated beneath five thick layers of thermal clothing Starter Tattoo Kits, I barley make it inside the building without freezing. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever experienced, my eyelids are beginning to freeze shut within seconds and every hair in my nose is the same. The air is so cold it’s painful to breathe and I find myself choking with each intake of the bitter arctic air. It’s a struggle to comprehend how anyone could or would want to live in these conditions.

Despite its modest size and population, 550 to be precise, Kangerlussuaq appears to have plenty going on both inside and outside of the airport and I’m not waiting long after landing before my first encounter with Greenlandic food. Following a short but terrifying shuttle trip from the airport along some narrow and heavily frozen roads I find myself at Roklubben, a converted, rustic and simply decorated rowing cabin on the edge of Lake Ferguson. Here the specialties are fresh, seasonal Greenlandic produce and locally brewed beer. I take my seat at one of the long and narrow banquet-style tables and begin to relax only to be reminded that my connecting flight leaves in just over an hour. Still this is more than enough time to acquaint myself with some of the local fare. Shortly after being seated, Kim Ernst, the chef-proprietor appears from the kitchen to welcome us and introduce the first course. He brings out with him a beautiful platter of home-smoked halibut and salmon, Greenlandic prawns, whale carpaccio, nattak (endlessly chewy whale blubber) and dried reindeer salami.

It’s an overwhelming introduction to the cuisine; my senses have never experienced so many new and exciting flavours and textures in such quick succession. The halibut is sweet, smooth and more intensely smoked than anything I’ve tasted before and the reindeer salami practically dissolves on your tongue like a wafer-thin slice of Iberico ham. Nattak, I’m reassured is a national favourite, Greenlanders appear to have an affiliation to it much like the Americans do with beef jerky, but I’m not entirely convinced. It has the texture of rubber and an intense almost rancid fish flavour.

A platter of traditional Greenlandic fish and meats at Roklubben – (Picture by Conor Mills)

Before I catch my breath, I swiftly presented with a generous fillet of perfectly roasted and locally hunted musk ox accompanied by beer-soaked potatoes from the most southerly tip of Greenland. The bitter arctic climate means that vegetation only grows in the south and even there very little manages to survive. I enquire about the musk ox and am told that despite it’s name it is a relative of the goat, but the texture and flavour are closer akin to beef, albeit with a gamier taste, apparently it’s also the most popular meat in the country.

Unfortunately there is no time for dessert, we’ve just had a call from the airport and apparently the plane is preparing to leave; if we miss it, the next flight isn’t until tomorrow afternoon. We say our goodbyes and are herded back onto the mini bus. On the short return leg Damascus Steel Tattoo Machines, the driver points out a small collection of wild musk ox standing motionless in the distance doing what they apparently do best, imitating large rocks. A bit closer a small herd of reindeer are grazing peacefully in the snow, it’s a fitting end to a unique and exciting morning. I’ve only been here a short amount of time but already I get the distinct impression that the relationship between food and land is different here. Restaurants like NOMA have rejuvenated worldwide interest in the art of foraging but here it has never left. It’s a necessity along with hunting and it’s humbling to witness the way in which the raw wilderness Tattoo Machines Suppliers, climate and food are all so closely interlinked.

Our next stop is Ilulissat, the third largest “city” in Greenland and home to the most active glacier in the northern hemisphere, I just hope we don’t miss the plane.

Local TV stations will be required to post information including rates to a public database on the political ads they run, the Federal Communications Commission ruled Friday.

How will this work? The FCC will host an online database making available information about political ads running on local affiliates of the four major TV networks in the top 50 markets, according to the FCC. The database will be available 30 days after the Office of Management and Budget approves the new policy.

The files will include information on purchases of specific time slots.

“The new rule covers about 60 percent of all expected 2012 political advertising on local spot TV, where the vast majority of televised political ads air. The remaining 40 percent will occur in smaller media markets and thus remain offline this year, disclosed in the public files made available at stations,” the Kantar Media Group’s CMAG ad-tracking service wrote in an executive summary of today’s ruling.

The information that will appear online is notoriously difficult to access. Local TV affiliates already make it publicly available, but only in paper copies at the stations themselves. For years, reporters and watchdog groups have had to travel to TV stations and examine records in person when seeking detailed information.

Broadcasters opposed the ruling, citing costs of disclosure and competition with other media forms. Television stations under federal law are required to offer political candidates the lowest available advertising rates.

“By forcing broadcasters to be the only medium to disclose on the Internet our political advertising rates Tattoo Starter Kits, the FCC jeopardizes the competitive standing of stations that provide local news, entertainment, sports and life-saving weather information free of charge to tens of millions of Americans daily. We appreciate Commissioner McDowell’s thoughtful and compelling dissent, and we will be seeking guidance from our Board of Directors regarding our options,” the National Association of Broadcasters wrote in a statement responding to the ruling.

The FCC is made up of three commissioners, two of which were appointed by President Obama. Robert McDowell, the lone Republican appointee who was originally appointed by George W. Bush and reappointed by Obama in 2009, dissented from the decision.

Broadcasters will have to disclose the rates they charge for political ads Tattoo Ink Supply, which are often lower than the rates charged to other advertisers. CMAG noted that this was a major reason broadcasters opposed the move.

“Although some in the industry have cited compliance costs, their real concern is that non-political advertisers will be able to look online and see the cheaper rates their political counterparts are paying–particularly the ‘lowest unit rate’ stations are required to charge candidates—and demand cheaper rates Tattoo Machine Price, themselves,” CMAG wrote.

The watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington had called for the online disclosure.

“With so much secret political spending by shadowy outside groups flooding our airwaves, it is more important than ever that we have some information regarding the identities of those who are trying to influence our votes,” the group wrote in a blog post on Thursday. “Like so many things in Washington these days, the decision to make these allegedly publicly available documents online seems like a no brainer.”

The FCC’s move will give the public a far more granular picture of where and how political money is being spent.

Currently, it’s very difficult to tell when and how political campaigns are spending money on advertisements. Outside groups–including super PACs and 501(c)4s–are subject to greater transparency. Those groups disclose ad spending to the FEC within 48 hours of purchasing air time, and the FEC reports it online almost immediately.

Campaigns, however, only disclose spending once a month–meaning that candidates themselves largely evade scrutiny on how much they’re spending at any given time. By the time the public finds out, the data is already a month old.

With the FCC’s ruling, that will change.

Two teenagers accused of a drive-by shooting in Sydney's west may have been recruited to do the dirty work of senior Hells Angels bikie members.

Police are also investigating whether the 17-year-olds are behind other recent shootings in Sydney's west.

“It is fair to say that Cheap Chanel Dresses,” state crime command commander Mal Lanyon said when asked if police were investigating other possible links.

“Certainly something that is part of the motorcycle gang culture is to get much younger and more junior people to commit their crimes.”

The teenagers were arrested separately on Wednesday over the shooting at a unit block on Oxford St, Merrylands, on April 23.

The teenagers have been charged with firing a firearm at a dwelling with disregard for safety.

One of them, arrested at a residence in Auburn Cheap BCBG Dresses, was also charged with firing a gun as part of organised criminal activity.

Mr Lanyon said the charges are very significant criminal offences that carry jail sentences of up to 16 years imprisonment.

He said it was part of the outlaw motorcycle gang culture to insulate more senior members of gangs by recruiting younger henchmen who have less significant criminal histories.

“It's obviously very disappointing to police that males of that age are involved in such serious criminal activity,” he told reporters.

“We will continue to investigate these people as individuals but certainly other members of those groups are (bikies under investigation).”

Both youths were refused bail and will appear in Parramatta children's court on Thursday.

Eleven people have now been arrested as a result of Strike Force Kinnarra, established on April 17 to investigate shootings at five homes and businesses across western Sydney.

BMW’s 1 Series is stuck between a rock and a hard place Tattoo Supplies, neatly slotting in between BMW’s perennial best-selling 3-series and the FWD wunderkind Tattoo Supplies, MINI. Loaded-up Coopers pass the $30K mark with ease and the base 3-Series model starts in the same neighborhood. This doesn’t leave much wiggle room with the 1 Series, but BMW is looking to make the most of what little extra market share is available. One segment that the Bavarian automaker is looking to explore is the “shooting brake” body style (think 2-door wagon) that would add a dose of practicality to the small coupe in the form of a rear hatch.

This type of vehicle has historically fared rather poorly in the style-conscious United States, but Europeans seem more apt to choose practical hatch-like styles, so we’d expect the new model to debut across the pond for sure. BMW is expected to launch a new version of its entry-level model that will be larger and offer downsized engines with direct injection and forced induction burning both gasoline and diesel fuel.

Herve Leger gown sale
Have you been waiting for Chrysler’s long-promised Ram hybrid pickup truck? Bad news: Speaking to PluginCars.com, Ram Trucks CEO Fred Diaz firmly put that notion on ice when he bluntly said Buy DKNY Clothes, “Truckers don’t want to buy hybrids.”

We’re not sure truck buyers are so much anti-hybrid as they are unwilling to cough up the necessary bucks to bring meaningful hybrid technology to their pickups. Either way Discount Christian Audigier Clothes, General Motors’ full-size hybrid trucks have failed to set the market on fire Chloe Dresses sale, and there’s little indication Chrysler’s would either Herve Leger sale, unless the automaker were to offer them at an extremely favorable price point. That seems unlikely.

For now Replica Chloe Dresses, it seems that the only hybrid pickup trucks Ram will offer are the recently announced plug-in models that were developed using federal stimulus funds via a $48 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant and a separate $5 million grant from the Canadian government. A total of 140 PHEV Ram trucks will be offered to fleet customers within the next several months.

The good news for mileage-conscious pickup truck buyers is that Diaz suggested other technologies from Fiat are likely to make their way to the Ram Trucks division at some point. Multiair and light-duty diesels sound like a good starting point…

David Cameron

As the world speeds up, can American constitutional democracy keep pace? This month floods hit, terrorists plotted, oil gushed, markets nosedived (then rebounded), and ash spewed. In response, our government moved at warp speed to calm investors, nab suspects, tweak airline rules, redeploy ships, and operate floodgates. But what if a month like this coincided with a period in which the wrong people are in power—that is, in the lame-duck moment when our country is being run by leaders who have just been evicted by the voters but have yet to vacate the premises?

On this score, Britain and America offer a study in contrast. In Britain, voters vote and losers leave almost instantly, as we have just witnessed. Gordon Brown is dead (electorally speaking); long live David Cameron!  But in America, George W. Bush continued to hold office for months after his policies were decisively repudiated by the voters. Even as the economy continued to crater, the people’s choice, Barack Obama, had no right to take charge.

American history serves up other such particularly awkward transitions. On Nov. 8, 1932, Herbert Hoover lost the presidency to Franklin Delano Roosevelt by a whopping margin of 472 to 59 electoral votes (57 percent to 40 percent in the popular vote count) Buy Christian Audigier Clothing, yet remained in power until March 4, 1933, as the nation drifted further downward and government did … nothing. Between Abraham Lincoln’s election in November 1860 and his inauguration in March 1861, the nation plunged into its deepest crisis ever because the electorally repudiated incumbent, James Buchanan Discount Herve Leger gown, refused to nip secession in the bud. For most of the nation’s first century and a half, voters waited even longer for a new Congress—13 months after Election Day for the House (yes, from a November election until December of the following year) and also for the Senate, elected via state legislatures.

Now we wait 10 weeks for the whole federal government to turn over Replica DKNY Dresses, thanks to the 20th Amendment Buy Herve leger strapless, ratified shortly after FDR thumped Hoover. Could America sync up with the 21st century’s pace and transfer power with near-British speed?

It is widely thought not: Because various dates are fixed in our written Constitution Cheap Bandage dresses, Americans have generally assumed that we could never approximate British briskness without a major constitutional overhaul. But in fact, Americans could speed things up dramatically without any need to amend our good old Constitution. All we need to do is creatively revise our political customs and tweak our election statutes.

Begin with the executive branch. Imagine that in November 2012, Mitt Romney and Chris Christie decisively best Barack Obama and Joe Biden on Election Day. In fact, Romney could become president in a matter of minutes after the concession speeches Cheap Missoni Dresses, regardless of the official timetables in the Constitution. First, Vice President Biden could graciously step down, Gordon Brown style. Next, President Obama could nominate Romney to be vice president, under the 25th Amendment (the one that enabled Richard Nixon to nominate Gerald Ford in 1973 after Spiro Agnew resigned). Congress could immediately confirm Romney by simply voting yes for him (as Congress eventually voted yes for Ford in 1973). And then Obama could gracefully step aside for President Mitt Romney.

It’s quite common to read, usually from liberal opponents of the engagement in Iraq, that George W. Bush’s administration hasn’t asked the American people to make any sacrifices. I must confess that I never quite understand this criticism. As a society, we collectively contribute a great deal from our common treasury to give Iraq a fighting chance to recover from three decades of war and fascism and to prevent it from falling into the hands of the enemies of civilization. And as fellow citizens How to buy Replica Panerai Watches, we experience the agony of loss when our soldiers, aid workers, civil servants, and others are murdered. (That each of these is a volunteer is a great cause for national pride.)

However, I do believe that many people wish they could do something positive and make a contribution, however small, to the effort to build democracy in Iraq. And I have a suggestion. In the northern Iraqi city of Sulaymaniya Fake Dolce & Gabbana Watches, the American University of Iraq has just opened its doors. And it is appealing for people to donate books.

Here is some background: In 2006 Fake Glashutte Watches, the McKinsey consulting group was hired by my friend Barham Salih, the deputy prime minister of Iraq, to produce a business plan for a university along the lines of the existing success stories of the American Universities in Cairo and Beirut. The board of trustees includes Ayad Allawi, Iraq’s former prime minister, Fouad Ajami of Johns Hopkins, Kanan Makiya of Brandeis, and Iraqi President Jalal Talabani. The U.S. Congress has pledged more than $10 million to the project, as has the Kurdish Regional Government, the autonomous administration of the country’s northeastern provinces. For reasons of security, the only campus open at present is in this area of Iraq, where Americans are not targeted and where al-Qaida dares not operate. But Salih, who is himself a Kurd and a native of Sulaymaniya, hopes that as the situation on the ground improves, there will also be campuses in Baghdad and Basra.

Among the projects already underway are an M.B.A. program in concert with Hochschule Furtwangen University in Germany and an English preparatory program run jointly with the American English Institute at the University of Oregon. An environmental-studies department is envisioned, with money from the government of Italy, to address the recuperation of Iraq’s southern marshes, the largest wetlands in the region, which were subjected to deliberate destruction by the regime of Saddam Hussein. The University of Vermont is hosting videoconferencing sessions in political science on such topics as federalism and church-state separation.

As anyone who has read the Arab Human Development Reports will know Imitation Chronoswiss Watches, the Arab region—which at the time of the Abbasid caliphate in Baghdad was one of the world centers of humanistic learning and philosophy—is in a profound crisis of intellectual unfreedom. It boasts of no great centers of study; it translates pathetically few books from other languages and cultures; it is prone to waves of intolerance and fanaticism under which books are actually burned. Thus the attempt to reverse this trend and to lay the foundation of a liberal and cosmopolitan education for the next generation of educated Iraqis is of the highest importance from every conceivable point of view.

I recently received a progress report from Sulaymaniya from Thomas Cushman, who is a professor in the sociology department at Wellesley College and the founding editor of the Journal of Human Rights. He tells me that the American University attaches very special importance to the establishment of a library in English. An initiative has been set up to furnish the campus with the most up-to-date books that can be provided. As Cushman writes:

What I did was ask colleagues to donate books, which they did in good numbers. We sent thirty cartons of first-rate books, especially on global affairs Fake Tonino Lamborghini Watches for sale, history and literature and they are housed in the new library. … The university is especially in need of technical books, social science books, software even. … Nathan Musselman, the Prefect of the University who is teaching a class, wrote to me thrilled to tell me that the students were now writing their term papers in English and using many of these books as their main sources for research. He is greatly desirous of receiving more, now that the initial library is set up. … So the idea is to get people to donate in a more micro way; to send one or two new Omega Replica Watches, current and important books (perhaps they have review copies, extra copies, etc) to the new library of the University. All of these small polyps could yield a substantial coral reef of knowledge for the new generation of students there.

So here’s what to do. Have a look at the university’s Web site. Get some decent volumes together, pass the word to your friends and co-workers to do the same, and send them off to:
